According to the Kaduna State Government, 32,297 tuberculosis cases were registered in 2023 as the state minimized the danger of disease spread.
Umma Kaltume-Ahmed, the State Commissioner for Health, made the announcement at a press meeting on Thursday in Kaduna to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day.
According to Kaltume-Ahmed, tuberculosis detection in the state has climbed from 21,557 cases in 2022 to 32,297 in 2023.
“This is a 49.8 percent increase above 2022 levels. This case detection rate accounts for 159 percent of the state’s TB case detection target,” the commissioner stated.
She went on to say that the development demonstrates a considerable improvement in case discovery compared to 53% in 2022 and that it reflects better support for the state TB program from the state government and development partners.

She stated that the 2024 World TB Day, themed “Yes, We Can End TB,” with the slogan “No Gree For TB, Check Am O,” was a follow-up to the pledge made by world leaders at the UN high-level meeting on tuberculosis in New York four years ago to end the epidemic by the year 2030.
The commissioner did note, however, that tuberculosis remains one of the world’s greatest infectious killers, with over 4,100 people dying each day from the infection and nearly 28,000 becoming ill with this preventable and curable disease.
She went on to say that global efforts to tackle the disease had saved an estimated 66 million lives over the last 24 years.
“Since 2000, global efforts to combat tuberculosis have saved almost 66 million lives. However, the COVID-19 epidemic has reversed years of progress in the quest to eradicate tuberculosis. For the first time in almost a decade, tuberculosis deaths climbed in 2020,” she remarked.
