Canva purchases UK’s Affinity to compete with Adobe in the design business

Affinity

Canva promises to empower over 175 million individuals in the design world, and this new release will enable professional designers to have inexpensive access to all necessary tools without the complexity associated with traditional design software.

The design platform also announced that Affinity will be a 90-person team, joining a bevy of other European startups such as Flourish, Kaleido, SmartMockups, Pexels, Pixabay, and SlidesCarnival in Canva.

Ashley Hewson, CEO of Affinity, remarked that this relationship will support the company’s aim of providing creatives with the tools they need to fulfill their best potential while also cultivating a community that promotes innovation and artistic expression.

Affinity’s creative suite, which is available on Windows, Mac, and iPad, includes Affinity Designer for vector-based graphics, Affinity Photo for comprehensive photo editing, and Affinity Publisher, an application for combining images, graphics, and text to create beautiful layouts for publication.

Meanwhile, Adobe has joined the competition by releasing Firefly Services, a collection of over 20 new generative and creative APIs, tools, and services, today.

These services will provide enterprise developers access to some of the company’s AI-powered features in Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop, allowing them to speed up content production in custom workflows or build totally new solutions.

It also introduced custom models, which enable organizations to refine Firefly models based on their assets.

Adobe and Figma reached a comprehensive merger agreement in September 2022 to expand their offerings. However, in December 2023, it canceled its $20 billion offer to buy Figma.
