Army starts converting 30 operational vehicles to CNG

In accordance with the federal government’s policy on the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) program, the Nigerian Army (NA) began converting 30 operational vehicles to CNG.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, was represented by Major General Erema Akerejola, Chief of Logistics (Army), and stressed the necessity of the NA’s participation in the effort, citing the huge fleet of operating vehicles and other requirements.

On March 19, 2024, the COAS spoke at the Nigerian Army Fleet auto switch kick-off programme.

According to Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, the service has begun the pilot phase of the program by converting approximately 30 vehicles from premium motor spirit (PMS) or gasoline-powered engines to environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG).

He stated that 30 operating vehicles using PMS will be converted during the pilot phase, and 22 workers will be trained in the conversion process.

He further expressed the NA’s eagerness to assist fully and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking the initiative.

Senator Sa’id Ahmed Alkali, Minister of Transportation, also stated that the program’s goal was to encourage the use of CNG as an environmentally benign and cost-effective alternative fuel for transportation within the Nigerian Army fleet.

He expressed confidence that the outcome would improve the cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency of the Nigerian Army.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, project coordinator for PCNGI, characterized the NA as one of Nigeria’s best institutions.

He further stated that the NA’s participation marks a significant milestone, given its massive fleet of operational vehicles.

He concluded by saying that the NA’s efforts have shown a forward-thinking attitude, displaying the NA’s dedication to environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.
