Justice Christopher Oba of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Apo, Abuja, has remanded a serving senator, Benson Konbowei, to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The three counts of forging the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate are the basis of the senator from Bayelsa Central’s trial by the police.
Upon being charged, he entered a not guilty plea to the charge brought against him on March 26 at his court appearance.
The court, on the other hand, granted the senator N50 million in bail but ordered him to be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre until the bail requirements were met.
The Inspector General of Police charged Konbowei with fraudulently forging a document titled ‘Certificate of Exemption’ with number 000256454 and dated July 4, 2008, in charge of CR/028/2023.
According to the police, the Senator violated Sections 366, 156, and 158 of the Penal Code Act, CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990, and was subject to penalty under Section 364 of the same act.
The senator pleaded not guilty to the allegations at his appearance earlier Tuesday.

The judge permitted him to return home and scheduled a hearing on his bail application for Thursday, March 28, 2024.
After hearing from counsel, the senator was granted bail by the court.
The court stated in its ruling, “The law is settled that bail is at the discretion of the court. Looking at the matter, it is not a capital offense.”
As a result, he granted the senator N50 million in bail with two sureties of the same amount.
According to the judge, the sureties must own landed properties with Certificates of Occupancy in the Federal Capital Territory.
The judge, however, ordered that the Senator be held in the Kuje Correctional Centre awaiting the completion of his bail conditions.
The judge then deferred the case to June 24, 25, and 27 for hearing.
