Smuggling is one of the variables influencing food availability in Nigeria, according to Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari.

The minister made this claim on Tuesday while speaking to House of Representatives members at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja for the start of the policy debate series.

Top government officials such as Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service Adewale Adeniyi and Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Sabi Abdullahi are also present in the House’s hallowed chamber.

“We have seen smuggling of foodstuff to other neighbouring countries. This has affected the availability of food items in the country,” the minister said.

Recall that the Abbas Tajudeen-led 10th House in November 2023 unveiled the Sectoral Debate series, an initiative aimed at improving the constitutional oversight of the executive arm of government.
