Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has been elected as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the party’s 12th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja on Thursday. In addition, Ajibola Basiru, from Osun State, was elected as the National Secretary.
After his emergence as the National Chairman, Ganduje expressed his gratitude to the President and assured party leaders that internal democracy would be a priority during his tenure. He pledged to implement a scientific register of party members and emphasized the importance of election management and conflict resolution. Ganduje also promised a level playing field for all party members during primaries, and he vowed to work tirelessly to secure victory for the APC in upcoming governorship elections across the nation.
Present at the NEC meeting were President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, and various chieftains of the party in the National Assembly.
During the meeting, President Tinubu addressed the gathering, expressing the belief that the APC has won the elections and it is now time to fulfill the promises of good governance to the Nigerian people. He reiterated that the 2023 elections were the best in Nigeria’s history.
Notably absent from the NEC meeting were ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, while the first National Chairman of the party, Bisi Akande, was in attendance.
The NEC meeting followed a session of the APC national caucus held on Wednesday. It is worth mentioning that earlier in mid-July, two members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) – Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore – resigned from their positions as the National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.
