It is no longer news that the United Nations has designated March 8 as International Women’s Day for nearly five decades.
According to the event website, the yearly event honors women’s “social, economic, cultural, and political achievements” around the world. The day also calls for action to promote gender equality.
This year’s theme is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” with a focus on addressing women’s economic disempowerment. Additionally, the campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is ‘Inspire Inclusion.’
However, another distinguishing feature of the 2024 commemoration is the three colors linked with the day—purple, green, and white—which represent justice, hope, and purity.
Also, to add to the excitement of the 2024 celebration this Friday, Google Doodle has recognized International Women’s Day, which acknowledges progress toward gender equality.

This year marks the 49th anniversary of the United Nations’ acknowledgment of International Women’s Day, which first occurred in 1975.
The Doodle, created by artist Sophie Diao, honors the historic Women’s Day marches in Saint Petersburg and New York City, which advocated for equal employment, suffrage, and the opportunity to enter public office.
The Doodle’s description focused on modern Women’s Day marches, addressing concerns such as income inequality, reproductive rights, and violence prevention. It honored the women who have sparked social change and inspired others through their advocacy for equality.
The doodle depicts a group of ladies passing down wisdom across generations within a quilt woven with symbols of progress over the years.
