1 Dead, Houses Burnt As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Yobe Community

Attack

One person was killed and more than 100 buildings were burned in what appeared to be a revenge attack by suspected Fulani herders on Gurjaja village, a community in Yobe’s Fika local government region.

According to sources, the violence began two weeks ago when some Fulani herders killed three people in Gurjaja hamlet, prompting the community to launch a retaliatory attack that killed two Fulani herders.

According to a source who requested anonymity for safety concerns, the Fulani herders burned down the entire settlement, causing the people to flee to neighboring cities and villages.

He claimed that the Fulanis assaulted the Gurjaja settlement at night, demolished houses, and burned down farm produce belonging to farmers.

Another informant, Mallam Abubakar Ustaz, stated: “I want to tell you that yesterday evening I saw many Fulani people coming from different directions, mobilised themselves in the night, and attacked the Gurjaja community where Abubakar Usman was killed; several houses and foodstuffs were burned down.”

A reliable source within the security agencies verified the attack on the Gurjaja community.

The state’s commissioner of police has since dispatched a significant number of police officers to the area to keep calm and prevent the situation from escalating.
