Five victims have been rescued and eight suspects have been taken into custody by the Makurdi Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.
A 56-year-old woman named Ude Rosaline and an 80-year-old woman named Innocent Josephine were among those detained; both were recognized as important figures in the trafficking.
The following people are also members: Ede Sunday Ngozi (52), Mrs. Celina Obiasogu (52), Virginia Okonkwo (50), Anthonia Onura (60), and Samuel Takura (50).
On Saturday, the Zonal Commander, Mrs. Gloria Bai, informed the media that the pursuit of Mama Nnamdi, who is still at large, was still underway.
She disclosed this in a statement issued and made available to journalists on Saturday in Makurdi.
She said the command swung into action after receiving a distress call from a mother who was looking for her twins.
Bai said upon investigation, it was discovered that the twins were allegedly sold in December 2023.
“NAPTIP operatives conducted meticulous surveillance and rescue operations across the Makurdi metropolis between January 17 and 22, 2024,” the statement read.
“The research revealed a strategy whereby the gang pretended to be aiders for school sponsorship in order to target vulnerable houses, including IDP camps.
“They obtain children and then sell them for amounts ranging from ₦350,000 to ₦900,000 each child, passing off the transactions as adoptions, taking advantage of the faith of gullible families.”
According to Bai, the victims who were saved have been reunited with their families, and the suspects are being prosecuted.
She did, however, warn the public to be wary of those claiming to be able to help with child education, pointing out that it is common for children to be bought and sold under the pretense of adoption.
Governor Adeleke was accompanied on the tour by the National Vice Chairman of the PDP for the South West zone, Hon Kamar Ajisafe; the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi; the Special Adviser on Transportation, Hon Moshood Yakub amonv others.
