Around 130 people were evacuated after a massive fire at a residential building in London’s affluent South Kensington neighborhood early on Friday, according to fire officials. Eleven people were hospitalized.
Around 100 firefighters and fifteen fire engines were dispatched to the scene of the incident at a terraced home near the Natural History Museum on Emperor’s Gate, southwest of the British capital, that had been converted into apartments.
When they arrived, the London Fire Brigade reported on X that half of the ground level of the five-story structure was on fire.
“The fire has spread from the ground floor to the top floor and roof. Crews are working hard to… stop it spreading to adjacent buildings,” said Station Commander Steve Collins, who was at the scene.
Five people were rescued using ladders, with around 130 residents evacuated from the property and neighbouring buildings.
“Around 11 people have been treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital,” the fire service added.
