According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kogi State Sector Command, there was a 14% decrease in the state’s road crash mortality toll in 2023.
However, the FRSC reported that at the 2023 Yuletide, it observed 58 car accidents in which 28 people perished.
This was revealed to media on Friday in Lokoja, the state capital, by the sector commander, Samuel Oyediji.
According to Oyedeji, there was a 14% drop in casualties as compared to the 2022–2023 period; nonetheless, there was an increase in RTCs, from 50 to 58.
He explained that the considerable reduction in the number of persons killed in the road traffic crashes was due to a series of measures put in place by the command during the ‘Operation Zero Tolerance’ of the corps.
”Again, despite the high vehicular movement within the state, there was no serious gridlock encountered throughout the period.
“This was also possible through the help of personnel (regular and special marshals) and other security agencies, who helped in the control of traffic at all the critical points identified in the state to ensure the free flow of traffic
“The command hopes that strict adherence to traffic laws and regulations by the drivers using the highways will help things get better day by day,” he stated.
The sector commander continued by saying that even after the exercise was concluded, the command would not back down from implementing all necessary corrective actions to stop drivers’ excesses and guarantee a decrease in RTCs on Kogi’s roads.
He asserts that everyone has a responsibility to maintain the safety of the road, and drivers are urged to follow all traffic laws and regulations.
He also counseled drivers to maintain a high degree of tolerance, patience, and consideration for other road users at all times to guarantee a crash-free environment year-round.
