Today, March 6, 2024, marks 67 years since Ghana gained independence from the British, its former colonial overlords, according to the Ghana News Agency.
Ghana became the first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to be emancipated from British colonial domination after 83 years of colonization.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the nation’s first president, declared Ghana’s independence from colonial authority to be a critical turning point in the history of the country’s leadership.
March 6th is always a time of celebration both nationally and among Ghanaians residing overseas, with a variety of events taking place all month long.
This year’s national anniversary celebration will take place at the Youth Resource Centre in the Eastern Regional capital of Koforidua.
In 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo decided to rotate the national independence celebration to showcase different regions and stimulate the local economy.
The Eastern Region is now the third region to host the national anniversary following the Central Region in 2022 and the Volta Region in 2023.
The topic of this year’s event is “Our Democracy, Our Pride.”
As the Special Guest of Honor, Côte d’Ivoire’s President Alassane Ouattara will be there to grace the occasion.
Along with Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament and the 275 Members of Parliament, some 120 ambassadors and high commissioners from other nations are anticipated to attend the event. There will also be a parade with security services, students, and numerous organizations and groups.
