The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako has called on all stakeholders in food management to take urgent action to mitigate future occurrences of flooding in the country.
Salako made this call following the flood prediction issued for 3rd to 7th October, 2023, by the Federal Ministry of Environment National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Hub.
He has however directed Nigerians living on floodplains to take proactive measures particularly those near River Benue and other areas predicted to shift to higher ground.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Head, Press and Public Relations, Ibrahim Haruna, Salako said reports from Adamawa and Taraba States have shown that the predicted flooding is taking place, hence there is need for urgent actions by all stakeholders in flood management nationwide.
In the light of the above, the Minister called on all the Stakeholders inclusive of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Ministry of Humanitarian & Poverty Alleviation Affairs, Red Cross/Crescent, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Federal Ministry of Health, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA) among others to activate without delay their flood emergency response actions.
Salako advised that the response actions should be geared towards awareness creation, evacuation, provision of basic needs and temporary shelter as well as providing medical attention/facilities.
He therefore assured Nigerians of the ministry’s continued dedication to monitor developments at the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Central Hub and will continue to update the citizenry accordingly to avoid recurrence of the past events.
