The production and sale of caskets in the state of Anambra has been outlawed by the government of that state.
This was included in the legislation governing funerals and burials in the state that was approved by the House of Assembly on Thursday.
According to this rule, every corpse that has been in the mortuary for more than a month must be reported by all mortuary workers to the Ministry of Health.
Anyone found to be in violation of the terms faces a fine of N100,000, up to six months in jail, or both.
It further stipulated that all burial and funeral ceremonies of indigenous deceased persons in the state shall be registered with the town union of the deceased.
Chukwuma Soludo, the state governor, responded by praising the assembly for the legislation in a brief statement on Friday.
“The Anambra Burial Law is a very progressive law to relieve pressure and burdens from the poor and to free women from oppressive burial customs,” he stated.
“We only celebrate a decent funeral; we celebrate ‘befitting living’.”
