The Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) has urged for the incorporation of traditional institutions within Nigeria’s security system to tackle the country’s rising insecurity.
Comrade Mulade Sheriff, CEPEJ’s national coordinator, stated during a news conference yesterday in Abuja that traditional rulers can play critical roles in tackling Nigeria’s security concerns.
Sheriff, who emphasized traditional leaders’ unique role as stewards of culture and customs within their domains, said their intimate knowledge of local settings qualifies them to lead security measures in partnership with law enforcement agencies.
“The engagement of traditional rulers in securing their respective territories is crucial to effectively curbing insecurity,” Sheriff went on to say.

He claimed that allowing this rulers to protect people and property within their borders would considerably reduce security threats.
The sheriff emphasized the pervasive existence of criminal forces within local communities, saying traditional authorities must be actively involved in combating various forms of violence, including political instability.
“To address the security challenges facing our nation, traditional rulers must be empowered with the resources and authority necessary to protect their kingdoms,” Sheriff asserted, advocating for the allocation of security funds to support their efforts.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to take proactive measures to integrate traditional rulers into the national security agenda, noting the urgency of their involvement in national security efforts to effectively address the prevailing insecurity across Nigeria.
